Emergency Medical Assistance

Although we have always been doing this informally, Project School Supplies has recently expanded our programs to include Emergency Medical Services for children whose families do not have the means to access necessary treatment.

This includes medical intervention,
emergency transport to regional hospitals either in Guatemala or Santa Rosa, the purchase of prescription and over the counter medicines and short term follow up.

Marcos is a boy we took to the doctor because he was fainting in class. The tests showed 600 parasite eggs in his stomach!

Karmen was a woman in labor who couldn’t get a ride to the hospital. An ambulance would have cost the equivalent of $175!

Her baby had the cord around his neck. Marel rode up into the mountains and helped carry her to the truck and drove down a very bumpy dirt and stone road and eventually on to the hospital in Santa Rosa, about three hours away.

She was just one of the endangered mother and baby emergencies that we have taken to hospital. Both mom and baby are doing fine!

Marel recently took a 4 year old boy to the hospital in Guatemala, about 3 hours from here, he found out he needs emergency operation.

We are doing a lot of this kind of work lately and could use some financial assistance for these programs. It costs at least $75 for car transport to hospitals, which is about $100 less than ambulance services here.
