Carizalito School

A New School for Carizalito Village

Big celebrations were held in March to open the new school … this was an amazing day!!!!

To celebrate the finishing of the school and bathrooms, the community held a special event, attended by myself, Julie and Beth, (who raised funds for Aula #1 and the bathrooms and pila), the Director of Education for the region, and all teachers, kids and parents of the community.

The school was decorated with colorful streamers and the village moms provided food and beverages. There were many touching speeches of gratitude, songs by the kids, poems, and presents to thank us. Some of the notes and drawings from the children were so sweet … I’ll save them forever. I couldn’t keep my eyes from tearing up constantly and I noticed that Julie and Beth were responding the same way.

This was truly a day I’ll never forget … and for all of you that helped with this project, I am sending you my deep gratitude for your support, and the tremendous gratitude from the folks at Carizalito 2. They are “one happy community” and feel truly blessed, as they put it, to have “heaven sending them the support that finally arrived, after waiting years and years.”

Thanks Everyone!

There is also a new Kindergarden at Carizalito Uno.

Olvin, the teacher, is on an honorarium from Project School Supplies since the government won't sponsor a kinder there. There are currently 39 potential kindergardeners.

This classroom has been painted by volunteers and furnished by donations. You can see the painted mural on the back wall which was painted by visiting volunteers.

The Kindermilk feeding program has also been expanded to this village and to El Chilar.

People in the village of Carizzalito are so excited and happy about their new school, which was completed in February 2010!

The dads were so grateful to be volunteering and worked very hard to make sure the school was complete before the school year began in February.

This is a particularly poor village and the government has all but abandoned this area. They had insufficient desks and chairs and absolutely no school supplies or books whatsoever.

Honduran rural schools are generally in very bad shape, but this one was so beyond repair, with a leaky tin roof, crumbling walls, rat infested adobe and creviced floors, it was decided to build a new one.

The villagers are incredibly grateful for “people (who they) have never met coming to help.” Thank you so much to everyone for contributing to this very special school. You have truly helped us move this village along into more promising opportunities for education!

Carizzalito is a village with 100 students ~ 75 in the classroom and 25 in the kinder.

Thanks to a donation from two women from the U.S., they got bathrooms and a pila to store water at for the first time in late 2009.

The school was beyond repair and desperately needed to be replaced. The walls were literally crumbling when touched. The classrooms were infested with rats with droppings on every desk and one hole in the wall was as big as a watermelon. The roof was leaking in many places and the beams had rotten. The floor also had huge crevices and holes in it.

The community is especially friendly. They are thrilled and grateful to have our help so far and the kids are absolutely charming!

The goal was to build a new school here and this was accomplished thanks to so many amazing and generous donations from the US in February 2010.

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped to give the children of this village a safe and comfortable learning environment they can be proud of and will look forward to going to every day.

Construction in Progress:

Work has also begun on building a new water pump. Ironically, water must be hauled to the site in order to build the pump!
