New School for Santa Rosita Village

Work was completed in February 2010 at Santa Rosita School.

For the first time ever children in this village will be studying indoors, thanks to the incredible donations and support from everyone.

What an amazing difference!

The note reads: Thank you for helping us to build our new classroom.

Santa Rosita is a community of coffee pickers who earn about $2.50 per day and live way up in the mountains. They are extremely poor.

Before reconstruction, the school was made of bamboo posts and plastic with pieces of tin for the roofs. Two aulas, or classrooms, did not have any plastic, meaning the rains were destroying the “walls” on a weekly basis. Not only did the materials get destroyed but the kids were getting sick regularly.

The community is comprised of hardworking and innovative folks who were desperate to ensure the best education and well being possible for their children.

Ellen worked with the engineer from Vision Mundial, who donated their services. The municipality donated some of the materials, and the hardware store Maranata Ferreteria gave their bottom prices on the rest of the materials. All labor except for the head abaniel (foreman) was carried out by volunteers from the community. Therefore it was possible to build the classrooms for less than $5000.
